A superb night of fights with 9 of the 11 fights finished by KO or submission. Crazy.
Roy Nelson and Matt Mitrione capped it all off with two minutes of killer striking by both fighters. Big Country not only won his fight but his fighter on the show took home the glass.
That fighter was Colton Smith who completely dominated Team Carwin’s Mike Ricci with his relentless grappling. Smith, a soldier, did himself, his family, and his country proud.
Weigh-ins for ‘The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale’ took place today at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, site of Saturday’s card. All 24 fighters made weight.
An upbeat weigh-in overall. Some notes, Jared Papazian tied the record for longest time to undress, Melvin Guillard sported a sweet Blackzillians tank top and then went all male model with skimpy blue manties, Pat Barry just had his head shaved and took the opportunity to make fun of Dana White’s baldness which is not always a good idea, Mike Ricci looked uncomfortable standing around in his speedos, Matt Mitrione was just super calm and cool throughout the whole process, Roy Nelson’s mullet is taking on new heights, and I had to chuckle when Roy and Matt faced off (pic to the left) as they looked like two guys standing around on a buffet line. Two of my favorite fighters, can’t wait to see them go at it.
The UFC announced today that the following matches have been added to the ‘The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale’ card happening December 15th in Las Vegas.
• Featherweights: Jonathan Brookins (13-5) vs. Dustin Poirier (12-2)
• Flyweights: Tim Elliott (8-3-1) vs. Jared Papazian (14-8)
Predictions: Both Brookins and Poirier lost their last time out but to some quality opponents in Charles Oliveira and the Korean Zombie respectively. A win for either of these guys puts them in the top five or so featherweights in the world and that much closer to a title shot. Brookins is tough but if Poirier brings his A game there’s no way Brookins beats him. Poirier by Submission in the 2nd.
The Florida State Boxing Commission, which oversees MMA under the state’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation, disclosed salary information for UFC on FX 3: Johnson vs McCall. Oddly enough, Mike Pyle topped the list over main event winner Demetrious Johnson. Not sure how Johnson’s people let that happen but given his Xbox 360 sponsorship, I’m sure he still had a good night. The total payroll for the event was $423,500. Here is the breakdown:
