With Vitor out with a broken hand, the UFC did some reshuffling and ended up matching Rich Franklin against Wanderlei Silva to headline UFC 147: Franklin vs. Silva II in Belo Horizonte, Brazil June 23rd.
Franklin was originally supposed to fight Cung Le at UFC 148: Silva vs Sonnen II but agreed to move up a few weeks for the rematch against Silva. The bout will be at a Catchweight of 190 to accommodate Franklin not having to cut weight too quickly given UFC 147 is two weeks earlier. The first matchup between Franklin and Silva at UFC 99 was also at a Catchweight of 195 where Franklin won by Unanimous Decision.
With Franklin taking on Silva, Cung Le will now be fighting Patrick Cote at UFC 148. Cote is a UFC veteran and was riding a five-fight win streak going into his title shot against champ Anderson Silva at UFC 90. He blew out his knee though in the third round and then suffered back-to-back losses against Alan Belcher and Tom Lawlor. He was then released from the UFC but has since won his last four fights.
