Chad Griggs (11-2) is making the move down to Light Heavyweight to take on Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis (9-1) at UFC on FOX 4: Stann vs Lombard August 4th at the Staples Center in LA. Probably a smart move for Griggs given the beasts he typically faces in the Heavyweight Division.
Griggs has had great success though at Heavyweight beating the likes of Valentijn Overeem, Gianpiero Villante and Bobby Lashely, but perhaps his last fight against 6’7″/201cm, 255lbs/116kg Travis Browne changed his mind about continuing on against such huge opponents, especially given how badly Browne man-handled him.
Probably a smart move by Griggs. He does have some serious KO power which could be a devastating weapon against smaller opponents. He’s also shown some good cardio and strength like with his hard fought bout against Lashley.
Davis comes in at 6’2″/188cm, 205lbs/93kg so is naturally smaller by comparison, but Davis is one of the strongest wrestlers in the UFC and will typically use his wrestling to break down and punish his opponents. His striking, especially leg kicks, has certainly improved but Griggs has been in against some very tough strikers and can definitely hold his own in that area. Griggs might have some problems though dealing with the relentless grappling and wrestling used by Davis in his earlier bouts. Davis is looking to rebound against his decision loss against Rashad Evans so I’m sure he’ll be pulling out all the tricks.
A great matchup for sure.
